Facilities
Grade 2* Listed Buildings
The Smithson Building – the main building at the front of the school site was built in 1954 and was the first Brutalist building to be built and matched in the surrounding buildings.
As such, the Smithson Building, the Holt Building and the fully equipped Sports Gym are all Grade 2* Listed Buildings. All three are currently part of the DfE’s School Rebuilding Project, Smithdon having been selected for the multi-million pound refurbishment. The project, which is now underway, is scheduled to take three years.
Pendall Building
The school has grown beyond the listed buildings, with new buildings added as the school has expanded. The Pendall Building was the first major development and underwent a £1million refurbishment in 2020. The building includes an ultra-modern Catering Suite with enough stations for 18 individuals to cook at one time; two Computer Suites and an Art Room, as well as a Conference Room with remote meeting facilities. There are three other classrooms used for Drama, ASDAN and PE and a series of offices for pastoral and support staff.
Shaw Building
The Shaw Building was completed in 2000 and was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in January 2001. It was redecorated in 2019 to mimic the black and white design of the Smithson Building. It is adorned with quotations related to the GCSE English Literature texts upstairs and famous men and women related to the Humanities downstairs. The building is the home to English, Maths and the Humanities subjects.
The Shaw Building includes a large multi-use Library including the traditional book selection area, a reading classroom and an additional open-plan, media computer suite.
Gillett Technology Suite
The building, which was opened in 2005, includes two Design Technology Workshops and a DT Classroom with a suite of computers, one of four positioned around the school site. From September 2026, the block also includes a modern Drama Studio with sound and lights.
T Block
As the redevelopment of the Grade 2* takes place, a new two-storey interim building has been built and opened in September 2026. The block houses the Assembly Hall and the Canteen. In addition, the departments of Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Business all operate from this block. Upstairs there is a fully equipped Music classroom with practice rooms. Outside of the block is a brand new playground.
Other facilities include:
- An interim administration block found at the entrance to the school.
- A fully equipped Sports Hall, redecorated in 2021 and with a newly replaced sprung floor for our Dance curriculum as well as our wealth of sporting activities.
- Interactive whiteboards or screens in all classrooms.
- Scanners/printers available throughout the school for student use.
- Over 20 acres of sports fields.
