At Smithdon High School, we believe all children should study a broad and balanced curriculum that allows them to develop the knowledge, skills and love for learning that they will need to be successful as they go through life. As a result of a wealth of academic research and wide ranging discussion the decision was taken in 2019 to return to a 3 year KS3.
A three-year curriculum, through Years 7,8 and 9, will help us to ensure that our students are offered the very best curriculum and experiences. It will also ensure students have enough time to explore all subject areas deeply enough to equip them with the foundation knowledge that is important for future success. Having the opportunity to study a wider range of subjects for longer will allow for additional content and themes to be explored as well as key concepts to be cemented into memory.
In Years 10 and 11 every child will study GCSEs in Mathematics, English Language, English Literature and Science. All students also continue to have core Physical Education lessons and lessons in Personal Development with a focus on study skills, life skills and wider philosophical debates around British Values and current news items during Tutor Time.
In addition to these compulsory courses, students will select the subjects they wish to continue to study. We believe that the options process enables students to select a choice of subjects that suit their interests and abilities.
Careful thought and consideration should be given to your child’s choices. We hope that you will discuss all the possibilities with your child so that, in partnership, we can support them in making an informed decision when this time comes.
Further information on subject choices, the Options process and key dates will be published to the relevant year group in the Autumn term.
