Smithdon High School

Facilities

Grade 2* Listed Buildings

The Smithson Building – the main building at the entrance to the school site - was built in 1954 and was the first Brutalist building to be built and matched in the surrounding buildings.

As such, the Smithson Building, the Holt Building and the fully equipped Sports Gym are all Grade 2* Listed Buildings. All have had full roof replacements in recent years and are currently being reviewed under the DfE’s School Rebuilding Project – Smithdon having been selected for an up to £50-million new build or refurbishment.

In the Smithson Building we are lucky enough to have a large central hall, which enables us to have assemblies with the whole school together. The sound system was upgraded in 2021, to give us state-of-the-art performance equipment enabling Smithdon students to perform the yearly musical on our own site.

Pendall Building

The school has grown beyond the listed buildings - with new buildings added as the school has expanded. The Pendall Building was the first major development and underwent a £1 million refurbishment in 2020. The project included an ultra-modern catering suite with enough stations for 18 individuals to cook at one time; 2 refurbished computer suites and 2 refurbished Art rooms, as well as a new Conference Room with remote meeting facilities, two other classrooms and a series of offices for pastoral and support staff.

Shaw Building

The Shaw Building, opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 2000, was redecorated in 2019 to mimic the black and white design of the Smithson Building and is adorned with quotations related to the GCSE English Literature texts upstairs and famous men and women related to the Humanities and Modern Foreign Languages subjects downstairs.

The most recent development to the Shaw Building was a complete refit of the Library, in 2021, creating a multi-use space including the traditional book selection area, a reading classroom, and an additional, open-plan, media computer suite.

Gillett Technology Suite

The newest building on the site, which was opened in 2005, includes three Design Technology-purposed classrooms and a designated Textiles room around a central IT Suite – one of 6 positioned around the school site.

Other facilities include:

  • A fully equipped Sports Hall, redecorated in 2021 and with a newly replaced sprung floor for our Dance curriculum as well as our wealth of sporting activities.
  • A Drama studio with sound and lights
  • A fully equipped music classroom with practice rooms
  • Interactive whiteboards or screens in all classrooms
  • Scanners/printers available throughout the school for student use
  • Over 20 acres of sports fields
